NEW DELHI: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his eighth Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort. It went on for almost 88 minutes. The last time PM Modi spoke for the same duration was in 2015.
PM Modi delivered his first Independence Day speech in 2014, which lasted for 65 minutes. His shortest speech was in 2017 when he spoke for a little under an hour. His longest speech was in 2016 when he spoke for 94 minutes.
During the 1 hour and 28 minutes speech, Prime Minister Modi lauded Indians for battling the Covid-19 pandemic with a lot of patience. He further said the country takes pride in having the world’s largest vaccination programme, with over 54 crore people have already taken the Covid-19 vaccines.
He also made the announcement for 75 Vande Bharat trains to connect different parts of the country in 75 weeks of ‘Amrit Mahotsav’.
Till 2015, the longest speech ever given by an Indian PM was in 1947, when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru spoke for 72 minutes. Here’s a look at the duration of some of the Independence Day speeches.
